Is ISIL finished for good?
The Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) was on the back foot in 2017, three years after it declared its so-called caliphate and named Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi as the leader of Muslims everywhere. Thousands of people have been killed in conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Libya. ISIL also tried to export violence and fear to Africa, Europe and the US. At its peak, its fighters controlled about 30 percent of Iraq. But it began losing ground at the end of 2015, when the Iraqi Army retook the city of Ramadi. Other successful operations followed, until, in December 2017, Iraq's Prime Minister declared his country ISIL-free. But is it just a temporary reprieve, and is it possible ISIL will regroup and return at a later date?
